Homework Hints

Consider these six helpful tips for homework:

1. Create a "Finished Folder"

   Help your child choose a convenient spot in the house where completed assignments can be placed. Make it a habit to place all finished work in this area each night.

2. Designate a Study Zone

   Help your child choose a comfortable location at home in which homework will be done. The study area must be well lit, quiet, and have all the necessary supplies.

3. Create a Study Survival Kit

   It is very efficient and convenient to have all the supplies ready even before homework begins. Necessary supplies include: pencils, writing paper, crayons, markers, ruler, sharpener, erasers, glue or paste, tape, construction paper, stapler, scissors, paper clips, and a children's dictionary

4. Put Homework in the Daily Schedule

   Encourage good study habits by scheduling homework for the same time each day. Make sure this is a time when an adult is available for support and help.

5. Encourage Independence

   Homework teaches responsibility: how to follow directions, how to begin and complete a task, how to manage time. Encourage your child to learn to work independently. Suggest appropriate references when needed: call a friend, use the dictionary, read the text book, use a newspaper etc. Give help only after your child has first made a genuine effort.

And most of all, give your child PRAISE when he or she does the work!
