Stewartstown Railroad

Chartered in 1884, this tourist railroad runs between Stewartstown and New Freedom, Pennsylvania.

Stewartstown Railroad

The "Mighty Mo" reigns on the 112 year old Stewartstown RR.

In the 1870's , the merchants and residents of Stewartstown realized the need of a transportation link with the main line of the Northern Central Railroad at New Freedom, if the town and agricultural area intended to prosper. The Stewartstown Railroad Company was chartered on Sept. 22, 1884, and opened exactly one year later between Stewartstown and New Freedom, connecting with the Northern Central Railway, a division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Passenger and freight trains operated over this line between Baltimore and Harrisburg via York until 1972.
In 1903, an independent short line, named the New Park & Fawn Grove Railroad, constructed nine miles of track eastward from Stewartstown via New Park to Fawn Grove. This line, absorbed by the SRR January 1, 1923, continued operations until 1935.
