Consider your time with the teacher an opportunity to share successes and concerns that will ultimately lead to a better learning experience for your child. In October of each year, the teacher will schedule a conference with the parent(s) to share the results of the first quarter of the school year. However, if you notice indications of a problem before the October meeting, do not hesitate to contact the teacher to share your concerns.

Consider these guidelines for a Parent - Teacher conference:

  1. Come Prepared

Keep a list of questions you want to ask the teacher. Be specific about things that please you or things that concern you: provide examples of behavior or samples of schoolwork.

  2. Share helpful information about your child.

The more a teacher understands a student, the better s/he will be able to help your child.

  3. Share your concerns, but also be a good listener.

It is important that both parties have an opportunity to express their ideas and concerns.

  4. Describe what you have done to resolve an issue and ask the teacher what they have done.

This insight can lead to a successful plan that you can work on together.

  5. Don't be afraid to say "I don't understand."

For your child's benefit, it is important to leave the meeting with a clear understanding of expectations.

  6. Take notes during the conference.

This will provide a good reminder when you have more time to reflect.

Remember, conference time is an opportunity to help your child!
