SAREX Project

In the spring of 1993, we participated in the SAREX project. Shuttle Amateur Radio EXperiment is a communications experiment carried on by the space shuttle while it orbits the earth. During this experiment the astronauts communicated with students from our school. With the help of the Towson Moose and Charlie Davis we were able to track the shuttle as it passed over our school. During this pass over we communicated with Colonel Ken Cameron (U.S. Marine Corp), commander of the space shuttle Columbia. As STS-56 passed over head, the commander answered questions from our students. Since we were the first school in the state of Maryland to participate in this project, this exciting day was reported by all the Baltimore television stations along with the various newspapers. Dave Dorian of WBAL Radio interviewed the students on his morning show. Prior to the launch of the STS-56 we had a sleep-over in the school for all our fifth graders and their parents and teachers. In the morning hours, these students appeared on WJZ-TV's morning show. Excitement filled the air as our students heard Col. Cameron answer their radio transmission.

In the fall of 1994, Col. Cameron visited the school the following year and presented the school with mementos of his mission. Since the STS-56 mission, Col. Cameron has commanded the STS-74 Atlantis mission which linked up with the Russian space station MIR.
