THE LONG BLACK WALL

Amongst the monuments there stands a wall,
that’s long and cold and black
where appears the names of my fellow countrymen,
who were not able to walk back.

They were the bravest I have ever known,
they answered their country’s call,
They knew their task was extremely hard,
and not popular at all.

They fought for a country that wasn’t theirs,
but they knew the fight was right.
so they endured the heat, the rain and the rot
and they fought with all their might.

And I saw them bleed and I saw them die,
and I saw them falling from the sky.
They wouldn’t quit, they gave their all,
and now their names are on this wall.

They engaged their enemy whenever they could,
with courage, valor and resolve.
But the rules under which they fought
impeded the assurance of victory for our cause.

I am proud and honored to have served by them,
when we answered our country’s call.
There have not been greater warriors than these,
brave Americans, one and all.

Greater love hath no man than this,
than to lay down his life for his friends.
These are the words of our almighty God,
and they lived them to the end.

And I saw them bleed and I saw them die,
and I saw them falling from the sky.
And we should never forget, we should forever recall
the names etched on this long black wall.

Now people come from all about,
to see, think, and touch a name.
They may be family, they may be friends,
but they will never be the same.

Because the men and women listed here
upon this cold black stone,
gave more for freedom than you and I,
for a country that wasn’t their own.

They reflect the true character of the American cause,
to defend freedom against all strife.
They didn’t hesitate, they didn’t pause,
they stepped forward and gave their life.

And I saw them bleed and I saw them die,
and I saw them falling from the sky.
My heart and mind shall for’eer recall
the names upon this wall.
